When Disaster Strikes, Walmart Helps!

Please Select a Bandwidth | |
Wal-Mart is definitely no stranger to dealing with natural disasters, but this latest storm hits close to home.

"These are our friends; these are our neighbors,” says Bryan Coon, Operations Manager for the Emergency Management Department.

But in order to help their neighbors, Emergency Management Department workers had a small problem to overcome: Getting to work.

"I’ve had some managers that have gone out there and picked up associates, brought them into work and at the end of their shift taken them back home again,” says Coon.

Since the storm first hit our area on Monday, Wal-Mart has donated flashlights and other resources to first responders, the red cross and emergency management agencies. But with other natural disasters ahead, it seems as if the work never stops.

"We never get to take a break here,” says Coon. “We're going to go straight from ice storms and winter storms, to volcanoes, pretty soon its tornado season, right after that its back to hurricane season."

And with so many high ranking officials within the company stuck at home, Coon says running the world's largest retailer still went smoothly, thanks to a few more conference calls than usual.

With Walmart's new CEO set to take over next week, the chain plans to emphasize renewable energy and other efficiency efforts, both in their own stores and among the suppliers with which it works.

Reuters reported Tuesday that Mike Duke, who will replace the retiring Lee Scott as CEO on Feb. 1, spoke this week at a sustainability conference in New York, telling an Internet audience that sustainability efforts are "all about the future." Duke was previously heavily involved with the chain's renewable energy efforts.

YMCA Gets $100,000 Donation from Local Sam's Club and Walmart

Associates from local Sam's Club and Walmart stores gave big to help improve the lives of children. A check was handed over for one hundred thousand dollars to the YMCA, to develop learning centers at YMCA facilities around the state.

YMCA C.E.O. Michael Bodenhausen says there is a big need in the community for after-school help for children who are falling through the cracks, and many parents can't afford to pay 40 to 60 dollars an hour for tutors.

Tuesday morning, Mark Marvin with Sam's Club and Walmart handed over the donation for one hundred thousand dollars from the Walmart State Giving Foundation.

In Idaho Falls, this will help develop a learning center with new computers and educational materials where students who can't afford to pay can come and get tutoring assistance after school.

Mayor Jared Fuhriman thanked Walmart and Sam's Club for this big donation, saying the community is a better place because of their generosity.

Michael Bodenhausen says this is extremely important to the more than 12 hundred children the YMCA associations around the state helps.

Michael Bodenhausen: "Economically, the best way to get out of a bad situation is through education and eventually going to college. That's why the YMCA has recognized this in this community as well as other YMCA's throughout the U.S. and wanting to make an impact and try to get these kids this help, so we're really happy to be in the fore front of this."

Mark Marvin: "It makes you feel great, I mean our mission is to save people money so that they can live better and when we get an opportunity to share money throughout the communities then it just makes you feel great."

This money will be shared with the other YMCA associations around the state for similar educational programs.

Sam's Club and Walmart associates say they aren't just giving the money, they'll also volunteer their time to help this Idaho Falls education center become a reality.

Walmart Revisits Mainstays

Walmart is again directing attention in the home products category to its Mainstays line of affordable basics.

The retailer devotes endcaps in the home fashion department to bed, bath and decor SKUs from the private label. The multi-category brand, which Walmart has merchandised since 1996, has been relatively overshadowed since the 2008 launch of two fashion-forward lines, Canopy and Better Homes and Gardens. (See Related Articles.)

Endcaps merchandising such Mainstays products as towels, apparel hangers, ironing boards and lamps are supported by side panels bearing colorful images of corresponding product. Perpendicular headers identify the Mainstays brand and act as overhead violators along Action Alley. Some endcaps carry channel strips that proclaim, "Refresh with color. At our unbeatable prices."

Walmart has redecorated its soft home and kitchenware aisles in recent months, switching out blue, minimalist graphics for lifestyle images, value-driven messages and a greater presence for its private labels. Among the changes, products from Mainstays, Canopy and Better Homes and Gardens are merchandised on brand-specific gondolas, supported by headers that feature lifestyle images, glamour shots and messages that underscore Walmart's "Every Day Low Prices" promise. Other aisles sport beige headers that carry the chain's "Save money. Live better" tagline.

Walmart has also stepped up merchandising support for its furniture collections. Display models from Canopy and Better Homes and Gardens occupy endcaps in the furniture department alongside flipbooks and countertop displays touting the brands. Shelf signs promote in-aisle and encourage shoppers to use Walmart's Site to Store shipping service.

Welcome Everyone

I am pleased to announce that this is a Walmart outreach to all respectable employees and valuable customers -blog- that will consist of EVERYTHING Walmart! There are many areas and activities that go on inside and outside of all Walmart stores that are not really broad-cast in a clean and clear manner which defines Walmart as a respectable company. For all Walmart workers, I encourage you to stay up to date with interesting Walmart facts and information that may benefit you and on one note, I would like to say, With our deteriorating economy which has left many Americans in a state of doubt and fear, together we can continue to strive and offer excellent service to all customers who have made us who we are, for the good or bad, and help them to Save money and Live better. After all, the customers are the winners and without them none of us would be a part of one of the world’s greatest companies. Let me end on a thought by the great Sam Walton, which is, “High expectations are the key to everything” thus we know what we must do and that is build upon are mistakes and continue to exceed.
I encourage all members that view this blog to reach out to everyone that shares these very same ideas or who is a part of Walmart and enjoy the friendly faces that can only be found at all Walmart stores across America.

Thank You and remember, Save Money. Live Better.
